Town Spotlight: Bernardsville, Our Hometown in the Somerset Hills

Our office is at 61 Claremont Road, and we have been serving the Somerset Hills since 1985, so Bernardsville is more than a market to us. It is home. When buyers ask what makes the town special, the answer usually comes back to one thing: it blends history, natural beauty, and everyday convenience in a way that is hard to find anywhere else.

Here is a closer look.

A Little History

Long before it was Bernardsville, this area was a section of Bernards Township known as Vealtown. In 1840 the name changed to Bernardsville, honoring Sir Francis Bernard, the colonial governor of New Jersey. The borough became its own municipality in 1924, when it separated from Bernards Township.

Its history reaches back to the Revolution. The Vealtown Tavern, later known as the John Parker Tavern, was a regular stop during the Continental Army's 1779–1780 winter encampment at Morristown.

After the Civil War, prominent New York families began building grand country estates on the ridge above town, an area long known as the "Mountain Colony." The railroad, built through Bernardsville in 1872, made it possible to commute to the city and helped shape the community we know today.

Neighborhoods With Character

One reason buyers love Bernardsville is its range. Along the ridge and in the hills, you will find estate properties and homes on generous acreage, many set well back from the road. Closer to downtown, neighborhoods feel more traditional and walkable.

A good example is the Olcott Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. It recognizes a neighborhood laid out in the early 20th century, with Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman-style homes on tree-lined streets.

Whether you picture a village home you can walk from or a private retreat on the mountain, Bernardsville offers real choice within one borough.

Getting Around

For commuters, Bernardsville is well connected:

  • Rail: The Bernardsville station, itself listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is on NJ Transit's Gladstone Branch, with service toward Hoboken, Newark, and New York Penn Station.
  • Roads: U.S. Route 202 and County Route 525 run through town, and Interstate 287 passes just outside the borough.

That balance of countryside feel and practical access is a big part of the appeal.

Schools and Community

Public school students attend the Somerset Hills School District, a regional district serving Bernardsville, Far Hills, and Peapack-Gladstone. Bedminster students also attend the district's high school, Bernards High School. Families also have a range of private and parochial options nearby. We always encourage buyers to visit schools and talk with the district directly about the programs that matter to them.

The Bernardsville Public Library is a community anchor, and it is part of the MAIN library consortium, which gives cardholders access to a wide shared network of libraries. Downtown, local shops and restaurants make it easy to run errands and run into neighbors in the same trip.

What Buyers Should Know

If you are considering Bernardsville, a few practical tips:

  • Properties vary widely, from in-town homes to large estate parcels, so comparable sales need careful, local interpretation.
  • Terrain matters. Hills, slopes, and long driveways are part of the charm. Look closely at access, drainage, and winter maintenance.
  • Utilities differ by location. Some homes are on public water and sewer, while others rely on well and septic. Plan inspections accordingly.
  • Historic context counts. In and around historic areas, ask about any local considerations before planning renovations.

The Takeaway

Bernardsville rewards people who value setting, history, and community. It is a town where a walk into town and a quiet evening on a wooded lot can be part of the same life.
